Hi. I am SIMLEE

24 Years old this year

You’ll get to know more about me throughout this page

The Place where I was born

Alor Setar is a Padi town. I lived here for 18 years and have many memories associated with this place.

My Journey in Wushu

When I was 11 years old, I began learning Wushu until I was 16 years old. I discovered that Wushu is the sport I love and want to dedicate myself to. Over these 6 years, many things happened in my life. I participated in numerous competitions in places like Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore, and locally. However, by 2016, I decided to stop Wushu because I hadn’t achieved my goals due to various reasons, which left me feeling frustrated. Nonetheless, I learned valuable soft skills such as responsibility, discipline, time management (understanding the effort and time required to achieve something), emotion control and how to connect with people. I’m grateful for the memories and the people I met throughout this journey.

My College life

In 2018, I moved to Petaling Jaya and have been living here ever since. I enrolled in Sunway College for a Diploma in Information Technology in July 2018. Here, I’ve met many people from different states and countries. Over the past 2 years, I’ve also learned things outside of my coursework. During semester breaks, I took the opportunity to learn the basics of Adobe Premiere Pro, and I also engaged in selling Betta fish through Facebook Live.

The First Video that I made

This is the video that I made in 2018, and it's the first video I ever made. I know it doesn't have much significance, but at that time, I simply wanted to learn some editing skills and was curious about how people edit videos. It turned out to be a very good experience. The video is only 27 seconds long but took me 3 days to finalize due to many retakes (NG). In the video, you can see me and my friend. The person wearing glasses is my friend from Ipoh(he took a train just to come find me and be part of this silly video, which was quite crazy, hahahaha), and there are two other guys who helped us with filming and other aspects, although they are not in the video. The four of us worked well together as a team, sharing ideas and supporting each other throughout the process

Selling Betta fish through Facebook Live

In the picture are two of my partners, one person controls the computer, and the other is the host. I started selling Betta fish when I was 17 years old, but I stopped after moving to Kuala Lumpur. I resumed selling because the Betta fish trend in 2020 was very lucrative. For example, a fish that cost RM5 could sell for RM80 due to high demand, which was quite crazy. It took me two weeks to prepare everything. I contacted suppliers from Butterworth and Seremban again and had my friend check the fish quality in Butterworth. After that, I started selling Betta fish through three Facebook Live sessions. The money I invested was returned, and I started making a profit. However, within three more weeks, the trend declined, so I decided to sell everything at a lower price. Through this experience, I learned that running a business requires more than just hard work; it also requires luck, timing, being faster than others, and more

My First Website

These two websites were my assignments. The Lim Guan Eng website was the first one I built using very basic HTML and CSS, and it wasn't responsive. I still remember how these two websites boosted my confidence and satisfaction; I was very happy about it. It was the first time I coded something, and while I know HTML and CSS aren't programming languages, it remains a very fond memory. During college, I also built some websites with backend functionality, but unfortunately, I lost all the files when I changed my hard disk and didn't save them on GitHub

I graduated in 2020 July

During my two years in college, I realized that schools can only teach you the fundamentals and may not prepare you for the professional world. I also discovered that you can learn coding on your own. Nowadays, everything is available online. One of the most memorable experiences for me was during my final year project (FYP). I encountered a problem that no one around me could solve, and even after posting on Stack Overflow, I didn't get a satisfactory answer. I joined various communities on platforms like Facebook and Discord, seeking help. Fortunately, I connected with someone from Iceland who was able to assist me. We had a call, shared screens, and solved the bug together. I am incredibly grateful for his help.

After College

42 KL

After college, I came across a program called 42 KL. This program is established in many countries and follows a self-directed learning approach without teachers. Participants need to complete challenges step by step, and the program typically lasts between 9 to 24 months, depending on one’s coding skills. However, I had to wait for about a year due to the Movement Control Order (MCO) since the program requires physical attendance. Not knowing how long the COVID situation would last, I decided to start looking for my first job.

My First Job

In my first job at Macrobase System Sdn. Bhd., I had a great boss who taught me not just coding but also the meaning of life and more, even though I only worked there for 4 months. I remember times when he would teach me coding until midnight. It was a great learning experience, and I consider myself lucky to have met someone so willing to teach, while I was eager to learn. Even now, we’re still friends, and I visit him occasionally. I left because a friend and I decided to start an e-commerce business together.

Sell Stationery Online

I always wanted to venture into e-commerce since my college days. During college, I tried selling something on Shopee, but I didn’t make any sales due to a lack of time and money. This time is different; I have both the stock and money ready, so I’ve decided to start this business.

These two pictures show the total sales from my main shop in 2022 and 2023.

In the first year, I was full-time because the sales were not stable yet, totaling 197k as I only had one online shop. The second year, I expanded to three more platforms:  Lazada, TikTok and one more shopee. I also hired staff to automate operations. Total sales in the second year were around 280k. I didn’t make any extraordinary sales because I focused on low-price items per checkout. Over these two years, I didn’t make a profit or loss. By the end of 2023, I decided to close the business despite automation, feeling the time that I invested didn’t balance with the returns, and I believed I could find more profitable opportunities elsewhere.

Full-Stack Developer

Before joining this current company, I worked part-time for four months at another company called Khwarezm Sdn. Bhd. I took up that role while waiting for my house renovation to finish so I could stock up on stationery.

HTML, CSS, PYTHON, DJANGO, JAVASCRIPT

Once my online stationery business could run smoothly, I returned to KL to focus on coding, which is something I’m passionate about and want to consistently explore. I’m very content here—both with the job and the people. We work together like a family, which makes the job even more enjoyable

HTML, CSS, PHP, JAVASCRIPT, BOOTSTRAP, PGSQL

My Freelance

I’m currently freelancing for Huasheng Advertisement Industries Sdn Bhd, a Chinese investor in Malaysia. The design of the entire website doesn’t fully align with my vision as it lacks a professional touch at the moment. The image I’m showing is their admin page, where they can perform CRUD operations.

My skills set

I'm the kind of person who pursues things I'm curious about or passionate about because we only live once, and I want to have no regrets. Coding is something I'm deeply interested in and committed to learning. I hope to explore more frameworks and technologies in the future.
